Note the storage created by building an open bottom platform bed with under mattress storage and "cubby" storage on either side of the bed. A trunk is built into the frame/foot board, as well. The blank wall space was also transformed for storage and practical use. The wall/headboard was transformed with wider trim and ship lap/tongue and groove siding.
Spending every idle moment with wood (carving or otherwise) and finding new ways to renovate my own home, I have decided (upon some urging from others) to make my services available to others. Reluctant to call my new venture a "handyman" service, DND Home Solutions will help solve storage and closet issues in your home, give your family room, basement, bedrooms and others a new look, using some accumulated interior design ideas. That being said, I can and will provide other needed services as they related to home repair and modifications. What inspired me to do this? I have heard over and over again that many can not find anyone to do "odd jobs" and modifications to their home. I can be swayed in other directions, but generally find myself gravitating to natural, rough cut and ship lap looks. I have used rock, tree slices, logs, rocks, branches, wood slabs and other rough cut lumber in my designs. I am not limited to that but thoroughly enjoy incorporating these elements. Another specialty is maximizing minimal space and creating storage options and redesigns of closets. I hate metal closet shelving and look for opportunities to remove it and restructure your space, creating room you never imagined having.
Pictures of other shelving, racks, wall designs and transformations (including outdoor living spaces) are available upon request.
Someone recently asked me how I made the transition from coaching to carving. I said that its the same thing. If you want to make a duck, you remove everything that isn't a duck. Beauty is, the wood gives far less resistance and I have never had the tree a block of wood came from come back and question what I was doing or how I was doing it!!
It's been a very eventful spring and summer for multiple reasons. Family is doing great with each mission and pursuit of individual/professional goals. Traveled a lot and one of the most recent trips took us to Hilton Head Island to chainsaw carve a sea turtle (or three) from a stump sticking through the homeowner's deck after October 16's Hurricane Matthew. https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p192698
Among some of the most enjoyable work I got to do this summer was the request for Teddy the Racing President (infamous for his futile efforts to win the nightly Presidents Race at Nationals Park in DC). Since that time, the gentleman that requested it was pleased enough to commission me to do Abe, TJ and George, as well. Can't wait til I can dedicate the appropriate time to them.
I do have a fairly substantial "to do" list, filling orders that have now climbed into the upper 20's. The routine through the school year consist of teaching all day, to the workshop by 4, shower around 9 or 10 and paint while catching up on whatever happens to be on the TV, then off to bed between 12 and 1 (sometimes 2ish). But, I love it. Every piece of it. I am still taking orders and excited about what challenges someone presents me with next. I am currently in a bit of a holding pattern as it relates to orders, as I prepare and build some inventory for some shows I have committed to this fall. The first one is the rapidly approaching, the 38th Annual Autumn Celebration in Dayton, VA http://www.daytonva.us/blog/event/36th-annual-dayton-autumn-celebration/, on October 7th. Carvings can be purchased on site and orders can be placed. Among the items available at the shows are Santas of all sizes, mascots, ducks, geese and swans. Orders can also placed by clicking the links throughout this website, which will direct you to my ETSY Shop. Order by price range and include details about what you are wanting in that range. We can talk it out from there.
I appreciate all the orders, the compliments and support as I've gotten back into this. It's been fun and I look forward to every day/evening that I get to create something that brings a smile to someones face!
Wow, this has been an amazing run. The amount of interest in my carvings and creations has been overwhelming. I asked for custom orders and boy, have I gotten them. From mascots, to themed carvings to bowls and other items. It has been so fun reading people's comments on Facebook (Sean Hanifee) and on Twitter (@ducksnestdecoys.com), by way of email and text messages! It has been fun hearing comments like, "I can't wait to give it to her/him," and "This will be my favorite Christmas gift to give."
I have a whiteboard full of orders and am looking forward to filling them all and more. Thanks again for your support and keep the fresh ideas coming. I need more dust!!! Sean
You never know what you might find posted on this website. I may post pictures of the entertainment center I have created from pallets and wood laying around in the woods, stuff I have created for our own home out of log slices, remodeled bedrooms, etc... Those services I am happy to provide in your home too (if travel is reasonable) since my wife it tired of wood overtaking our home!!! Chainsaw carvings, knives, strange sculpture, but mostly ducks and detailed carving. I use knives, a Foredom tool, chainsaws, grinders, table saws, sanders and CARVING KNIVES to create the pieces I offer for sale. Some of my best work is yet to come. You can see on these pages the wide variety of things I do when I would otherwise be "eaten by the chair" in our living room, in front of the TV.
A few notes about some of the items shown: The Oriole Bird was carved from an Oak Log after my son (who is actually in the Orioles organization, RHP) challenged me to carve the Angry Bird from a log. I did it in one weekend and plan to put it on the front stoop of our house unless someone wants to buy it!! Everything is for sale..... The Bear Head was my first chainsaw attempt (about a month ago) and I learned that I really like it. I have gotten better since then, but it is for sale too! Something you want from a log? Let me know!!
The Ducks are my FAVORITE to look at and carve. Have gotten better at paining---use airbrush a lot more than I use to. Take notice of the detail in ALL the feathers, that is my favorite part of the carvings and what makes them look the most realistic.
The Nest is located in Rawley Springs, VA. I am originally from the Eastern Shore of MD. I grew up with ducks and geese flying over and hunting deer for one week out of the year. I ate crabs as often as I could get to them!!
Now, crabs are a four hour drive away, turkeys run through my yard, I occasionally hunt "resident geese" that have annoyed a local farmer, the ducks live between the same creek banks year round (no migration) and I have deer and bear in my yard on a daily basis. Things have changed, but I still have a passion for creating things other people love out of wood.
Post a comment, let me know that putting this site together was worth while! Let me know what I can carve for you or what you might like to purchase that is sitting in my basement trying to blend in with all the other things I have collected and accumulated over the years.
